Santa Fe wins first Class 1 title; Boonville drops semifinal

The Santa Fe Chiefs captured their first state baseball championship Thursday, beating Stoutland 12-7 for the Class 1 title.

The same couldn’t be said for the Boonville Pirates on Friday. Webb City routed Boonville 14-3 in the Class 3 semifinals.

On Thursday, Taylor Wesley went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and was the winning pitcher, as the Chiefs completed a 20-0 season.

Wesley (6-0) gave up seven runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in seven innings at Meador Park  in Springfield.

Daniel Hernandez (6-1) permitted two runs — none earned — on five hits with one strikeout and one walk in three innings.

Oran beat New Haven 5-2 for third place.

CLASS 3

Webb City spoiled Boonville’s bid for its first state championship Friday, erasing a 3-2 deficit with nine runs in the third inning in the semifinal round.

Chance Sossamon (6-1) gave up three unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Chuckie Jones (10-1) allowed nine runs on four hits with one strikeout and three walks in two innings.

Webb City (24-5) will meet St. Dominic (25-3) in the championship game at 1 p.m. today.

St. Dominic beat Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) 25-8 in the other semifinal.

Boonville (21-3) will face Notre Dame (19-7) in the third-place game at 10 a.m. today.

CLASS 2

Scott City beat Barstow 13-3 Thursday to win the Class 2 championship.

The Rams (23-1) won their first state baseball title after breaking open a close game with seven runs in the sixth inning. They took a 6-3 lead into the sixth.

Shae Simmons (7-0) gave up three runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Corey Wacknov (9-1) allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings.

Conway beat Hallsville 7-3 for third place.

CLASS 4

Francis Howell rallied from a 5-2 deficit Friday to beat St. Louis University High 8-5 in a Class 4 semifinal.

The Vikings scored four runs in the third and two in the fifth to advance to today’s championship game.

Reliever James Allen (4-1) pitched four shutout innings, giving up six hits and one walk while striking out four.

Mike Bucchino (5-2) permitted eight runs — five earned — on six hits with one strikeout and five walks in four innings.

Francis Howell (24-3) will meet Ozark in the title game at 4 p.m. today.  SLUH (20-7) will play Oak Park for third place at 7 p.m.

Ozark beat Oak Park 7-3 in the other semifinal, scoring six runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit.

Ethan Mather (7-0) allowed three runs on eight hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.

Jordan Owen (5-2) gave up six runs — five earned — on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.
